Hello there, I’m Britain Shaw Everyone has a story to tell. Sometimes it is filled with dark twists and turns, shadows, and the unexpected. Other times it is full of light, gentle breezes, and warmth. Stories are often full of both and it can be daunting to try and revisit some of the harder chapters alone. I offer a place of solace for your stories. A place where we can open and read each chapter of it together, learn from them, and gather tools to face the battles ahead. A place where we can challenge the things that still haunt us from these stories, and then put them on a shelf, a reminder of where you came from and what you’ve overcome. Together, you will learn self-esteem and coping skills, face challenges to your thoughts and patterns, and heal from old wounds.
My own story starts in Corpus Christi, where I received my undergraduate degree at Texas A&M Corpus Christi in 2016 majoring in Psychology and minoring in Criminal Justice. While in school, I worked in an inpatient, rehab facility with teen boys who turned to substances while they struggled with depression, anxiety, and other unexpected life stressors. The population I worked with diversified my experience in the field as I taught them valuable social skills such as conflict resolution, coping skills, interpersonal relationship skills, and independent living skills to help facilitate a higher level of functioning when they left the program.
From there I moved to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and was given the opportunity to work at Butterfly Effects. It was here I trained as a registered behavioral technician where I gained valuable experience working with the neurodivergent populations and their families as I helped teach children with autism independent living skills. From there, I chose to develop a more in-depth understanding of mental health through my graduate studies at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. My journey from a pre-licensed professional to a Texas and Missouri LPC, started at Cary Scott Counseling. There, I was given space and supervision to learn how to be the best mental health counselor I can be. Through Cary Scott Counseling I became trained in the Ross Trauma Model and learned how to help clients through depression, heal from trauma, work through grief, and other struggles my clients brought in.
Now, in Ouroboros Counseling, I continue to help clients build up their self-esteem, learn new ways of thinking, and face the monsters in their own narratives through a combination of therapy types with a focus on narrative, DBT-informed, and IFS-informed therapies. I also help clients in their narratives as a certified therapeutic tabletop game master.
I’ve found a passion for working with different communities including the LGBTQIA+ and alternative lifestyle communities. So, hang up your armor, put down your sword, and come tell me your story.

Tom Shuman
Certified Therapeutic Game Master and Life Coach
Hello, my name is Thomas R. Shuman, I’m a subclinical mental health professional here at Ouroboros Counseling. I specialize in helping you figure out where you are in your story and navigate through any obstacles you see in your way to the ending you’ve written for yourself. We all experience times in our own stories where we feel like we’ve written ourselves into corners, I’m happy to help walk with you as you learn how to pick up the pen again and learn that the story is never over so long as you keep writing.
I’m born and raised in St. Louis, having gone to Webster Groves and am certified as a life coach and Therapeutic Game Master. I’m here in my own journey that’s had several highs and lows of its own and am always happy to help guide others to where they want to be. I specialize in using a narrative approach to life coaching and know that the words we use to label the world around us affects our ability to interact with it.
Those things that we count as impossible in our mind before we even attempt them are things we can never dream of achieving in the world around us.
I’m here to help edit and turn the things in your lives that you view as dragons into much more manageable challenges for where you are in life. I specialize in helping teens and young adults plan and move towards the next stages of their lives. If you or someone you love needs help regaining control of their own narratives: from how to develop healthy study habits, figure out where their apprehensions of the future are coming from, or just need someone to walk with them as they make the next big transition in their life, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
